The
north shore, which includes Kilauea, Kalihiwai, Anini, Princeville,
ltanalei, and Ha'ena, is the most spectacular its rugged mountains,
beautiful beaches, and green vistas are the Kauai of postcards. As the
windward shore, the north also gets the most rainfall, particularly
in winter months when the surf at the beaches is also stronger. Despite
its rainfall, many people love the north for its rural peacefulness
and magnificent beauty.
Princeville, once a cattle ranch high on an ocean bluff, is now a resort
complex featuring the spectacular Princeville Golf Course and the even
more spectacular Princeville Hotel, as well as a wide range of
condos and homes. These accommodations offer astonishing ocean views,
particularly at sunset. Getting to the beach may be difficult for most
people, however, requiring a hike down the cliff to one of the small
beaches except for hotel guests who can take an elevator!
Our favorite family beach in north shore is Kalihiwai (pictured)
which combines spectacular beauty with wonderful summertime swimming,
as well has firm golden sand, perfect for running. Kids will love the
the brackish pools behind the beach for fishing, swimming, and playing
with a rope swing. |
A short drive away is magnificent Hanalei Bay, one of Kauais
finest beaches. You can stay in the town of Hanalei itsel, and rent
a private home or apartment on the beach or, at the most, a block
or two away. Or you can travel further west, towards Ha'ena, and rent
a house, B & B, or a Hanalei Colony Resort condo.
Spectacular Hanalei Bay, an unforgettable image of Kauai for
those rainy evenings back home! Great for for swimming and surfing,
when surf conditions are right, and for running and walking at any
time.
